Do Wuhan Hotels Accept Foreigners? What to Book and What to Show at Check-in
The rule, the reality in 2026, and the one Chinese sentence that solves it.
The rule
Since mid-2024 Chinese hotels may not refuse a guest for holding a foreign passport, and every hotel must register foreign guests with the local police within 24 hours — the hotel does this, not you. In practice, international chains, 4–5 star hotels and most city-centre business hotels register passports without a blink. Ultra-budget chains, village guesthouses and some hostels still sometimes say no, usually because their software cannot scan a foreign passport.
What to book
- Trip.com filters hotels that accept foreign guests and has English chat support; it is the safest booking route in Hubei.
- Wuchang (Zhongnan Road, Hongshan Square, Tanhualin) for sights and lakes; Hankou (Jianghan Road, the old concessions) for food and evenings; Optics Valley for cheap modern rooms 40 minutes from everything.
- Outside Wuhan: Yichang riverside chains are fine; on the Enshi canyon rim or inside Wudang's park, message the host first.
The sentence
你好，请问酒店可以接待外国客人、登记外国护照吗？ — 'Hello, does this hotel accept foreign guests and register foreign passports?' Send it before booking a guesthouse, or show it at reception. GoHubei's Stay page has it as a full-screen card.
At check-in
Bring the physical passport — a photo is not accepted. Keep a photo of your passport and entry stamp in your phone anyway. If you stay with friends instead of a hotel, you must register yourself at the nearest police station (派出所) within 24 hours; hotels do it automatically.
