At the table with Hubei hosts

餐桌礼仪 · cān zhuō lǐ yí

Hubei hospitality means over-ordering, insisting, and pouring. Knowing five gestures will make your host glow.

The host orders far too much on purpose; leaving food is polite, finishing everything means they under-ordered. Say 够了够了 (gòu le, enough) with a smile when they add more.

Pour tea or beer for others before yourself. When someone pours for you, tap two fingers on the table — a silent thank-you.

Toast (干杯 gān bēi) with your glass slightly lower than an elder's. 随意 (suí yì, 'as you like') lets you sip instead of drain.

Never stand chopsticks upright in rice — it echoes incense at a funeral. Rest them on the holder or across the bowl.

Bills are fought over. Let your host win once, then insist on treating them to breakfast the next day.

Tipping is not expected anywhere in Hubei. A sincere 谢谢 or a small gift from your country goes further.
