Spring cherry blossoms, summer crayfish and lotus, autumn osmanthus and the best travel weather, winter lotus root soup and Spring Festival fireworks.

Spring (Mar–May): Wuhan University and East Lake cherry blossoms in the second half of March; Qingming (early April) family tomb-sweeping; Wuhan Marathon; azaleas on Wudang.

Summer (Jun–Aug): 35°C+ 'furnace' heat, crayfish season, Dragon Boat Festival in June, lotus at East Lake, Enshi cool escapes, Daughters' Fair in August.

Autumn (Sep–Nov): the best months — clear skies, Mid-Autumn mooncakes and family reunions, osmanthus scent in Wuchang, red leaves at Shennongjia in October, National Day Golden Week crowds Oct 1–7 (avoid).

Winter (Dec–Feb): grey and damp, 0–8°C, Hongshan purple stem season, hotpot and lotus root soup, Spring Festival (Jan/Feb) when the province goes home — shops close for a week, then lanterns.
