Step by step

1. Book on Trip.com or the official 12306 app (passport verification takes a day).
2. Know your station: Hankou Station (Line 2) for Yichang and the west; Wuhan Station (Line 4/5) for Beijing/Guangzhou lines; Wuchang Station (Line 4/7) for slower trains.
3. Arrive 40 minutes early; passport scan at the gate replaces a paper ticket.
4. Second class is comfortable. Business class (商务座) is a lie-flat treat for ¥300–500 more.

Local tips

• Trains sell out around Golden Week (Oct 1–7) and Spring Festival — book weeks ahead.
• Station shops sell duck necks; that's the local train snack.
